Weightlifting

 

Just one thing that you’ll be getting stuck into in a CrossFit session is plenty of weightlifting, so expect to become best friends with the barbell. Weightlifting is just one of the major components of CrossFit training, and it will help you to improve your strength, build muscle and endurance, increase your metabolism, help to strengthen your bones and connective tissues and more. 

 

Some of the weightlifting movements that you can expect to take part in during CrossFit classes include back squats, front squats, deadlifts, clean and jerks, and snatches. A lot of us can feel anxious before going to our first class as we don’t know what we should wear, and what will work best for the movements that we will be taking part in. CrossFit works our entire bodies through a range of powerful and dynamic movements, so we need to be sure to be wearing the appropriate clothing so that we can have the best session possible.

A Comfy and Breathable T-Shirt or Vest

 

We recommend opting for a comfy and breathable t-shirt or vest. You are going to be working hard during a CrossFit class and probably sweating, so you want to be wearing something that is going to keep you as cool and dry as possible. You also want to wear something that you can move freely in, with no irritation or distractions. 

 

Go for a comfortable t-shirt or vest that you feel like you can move in, and that will keep you cool. Reach for materials such as cotton that are breathable and lightweight, so you don’t overheat. Ideally you don’t want to wear a top that is too loose or baggy, so that it doesn’t get caught on any equipment or get in your way. 

 

Bottoms that Allow you to Move Freely

 

During a CrossFit class you will most likely get quite hot, so a lot of people tend to opt for wearing shorts as they allow their legs to breathe and don’t restrict movement. You want to wear something on your bottom half that is also breathable, and made of a flexible fabric so you can move freely. 

 

So go for some shorts that are above the knee so you can move properly and feel cool in, or a pair of leggings that you feel comfortable in. We recommend leaving the jogging bottoms at home, as they have excess baggy material and you’ll probably get quite sweaty in them.

 

Comfy and Lightweight Footwear 

 

The shoes you wear to a CrossFit class are important as they will be what keeps us running, lifting, moving and jumping throughout the session so they need to offer us optimum levels of support. You want the shoes you wear to be lightweight, agile, and be able to absorb the impact of fast movements as well as have a stable and strong base. 

 

Go for a trainer that you feel comfortable in and that is breathable so your feet don’t get too hot, and that you feel like you can move around in. Many people also opt for wearing shoes like Converse or Vans, as they have a flat sole and a strong base.

You might be wondering, how best to prepare before your first session and what you can do to ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible?   • Get a Good Night’s Sleep

 

The preparation starts the night before. Getting a good night’s sleep is key to ensuring that you feel rested, have as much energy as possible, and so you don’t feel tired during the session. CrossFit requires a lot of energy as you will be working your entire body through powerful and explosive movements, so its essential that you feel rested. 

 

When we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies have to work much harder to keep us going and this can result in us feeling a lot more tired, lethargic, stressed, hungry and even moody. So make sure to get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep at a minimum the night before your first session, and this way you will be sure to feel your best performing to your body’s maximum ability. 

  • Drink Plenty of Water

 

Hydration is key to helping us have the best workouts, and we need to focus on hydration pre training, during training, and post training. When we exercise, we lose water so to function properly we need to be hydrated at all times. Dehydration causes us to feel more tired, our heart rates to rise, our body temperature to get higher and it makes exercise a lot more challenging. 

 

We can also put ourselves at risk of feeling dizzy, feeling faint, getting cramps, and feeling shaky if we aren’t hydrated. So be sure to drink plenty of water before your session, take water to sip on during, and hydrate with lots of water once you have finished your session.

  • Eat a Carb Rich Meal

 

With nutrition, it can be difficult to know what to eat before a CrossFit session as a beginner. To maximise your performance and have the best session possible, you should be having a carb rich meal 2 to 3 hours before your session. This should consist of complex carbs such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, wholewheat bread, or wholewheat pasta. If you’d like, you can also have a carb rich snack closer to your session, such as some rice cakes, some jam on a bagel, or some fruit to give you a quick source of fuel. 

 

Carbohydrates are our body’s primary fuel source of energy, and they help us to have more power, strength, and better endurance for our workouts. So be sure to eat your carbs before your CrossFit session, and fuel up on them after your workout too as your body will need to replenish them.

Prioritise Recovery 

 

You will also need to prioritise your recovery. When you first start CrossFit, you might feel quite sore and achy after your sessions as you will be performing a lot of new movements and using muscles in your body that might be new to you. Be prepared to be hurting, and make sure to recover. 

 

This might include stretching, taking a hot bath with Epsom salts, using a massage gun, and just giving yourself the time that your body needs to recover. Remember that recovery is just as important as the training itself, and we have to recover properly in order to improve our training. You also don’t want to end up injuring yourself by not allowing your muscles to recover properly, so prioritise recovery always.
